The Jr. Livestock Committee is looking for a new member. If you are interested in serving on the Jr. Livestock Committee please write a letter of interest and send it to or drop by the Extension office. A complete list of committee responsibilities and by-laws can be obtained at the office or contact Steve Hamilton, 641-2111 with questions. Letters of interest need to be submitted by February 21, 2014.
The West Slope Leathercraft Workshop is an opportunity to get you excited and started in your leathercraft project. It is open to any 4-H member and is a fun day. Workshop details and registration are below. Workshop happens in Grand Junction on February 8, 2014. Contact Nadine with questions. She might be going and would be willing to take you.
Colorado Leadership Development Conference – LDC
The Colorado 4-H Leadership Development Conference focuses on leadership and group skill building. Throughout the weekend, 4-H youth will participate in several hands on “think-tanks” where they will work on presentations. The banquet Saturday evening recognizes outstanding youth, volunteer 4-H leaders, and honored guests. This evening also includes an IFYE presentation.
Leadership Development Conference is for members ages 14-18 as of December 31, 2013. For those interested in attending please register through 4HOnline by January 10, 2013.
The schedule is a little different this year. We will leave Gunnison afterschool on Thursday, January 23, attend 4-H day at the capitol on Friday and return Sunday evening, January 26. Transportation will be provided. The conference will be held at the Renaissance Denver Hotel. Conference lodging and registration will be $75. Come learn about Creative Cooks. If you like to bake, cook, make things, or plan parties this might be a fun activity for you. Creative Cooks is a program where 4-H members can be creative with meal planning. Participants learn about nutrition, food safety and food preparation in a fun and creative way.
On Tuesday, January 7 we will do an introduction activity and make something of course. Meet afterschool at Fred Field Heritage Center.
Youth Fest – Firing Up Your H
Youth Fest is the state wide 4-H camp for members ages 9-13 happening February 7-9. It is held at the Ponderosa Retreat Center in Larkspur. Registration is $60.00. Transportation will be provided. Workshops will be focused on Head, Heart, Hands, and Health.
If you are 16-18 you can be a counselor. Contact Nadine if you are interested.

Please have your enrollment done by January 31. Clubs are rocking and project help is starting so help those volunteer leaders out by signing up. It is a tremendous help to them to know who is participating. Dragging your enrollment out does take additional time and effort from those volunteers. The Extension office also needs to order books and manuals and we try to make one order to expedite project work. If you have not re-enrolled please do so through 4H Online.
Club Leaders, Horse/Livestock/General Committee members, Project Leaders, Resource Leaders should also enroll at 4H Online.
Project Help Starting
The following project areas will be having their orientation meeting at the end of the month. We will be setting schedules and also reviewing the project. All orientations happen afterschool at the Extension office. Members may take the bus from school to the fairgrounds.

Beef Weigh In
The Market Beef Weigh-In will be held Sunday, February 2, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fred Field Heritage Center. Please read the following guidelines for this weigh in:
– 4-H members must be enrolled in the Market Beef Project by Friday, January 31. You can enroll on line at 4H Online.
– Market Beef animals must be halter broke and able to be lead to and from the scale.
– The loss of an ear tag must be immediately reported to the Extension office. Market animals present at the Cattlemen’s Days show without proper identification will be prohibited from being shown or sold.
– Please bring all applicable paperwork for the brand inspector.
– Let Eric know at the Weigh-in if you will be needing a Colorado State Fair ID. Arrangements will be made at another time to do the retinal scan.
Informational meeting for parents and kids will be January 28 from 4:00-4:30 at the Extension office. For those interested, judging is a great way to teach livestock knowledge and speaking skills. Come to the meeting to find out how you can get involved.
Speakeasy – A Presentation Field Day
Many, many 4-H alumni have shared that they became comfortable speaking in front of a group through their 4-H experience. Many of you probably don’t know that giving a demonstration/presentation every year is an expectation of every 4-H member. Take advantage of this new opportunity to learn about presentations, perfect your skills, and build, practice, and deliver a demonstration. This field day is geared towards 5th through 8th graders but all members, parents, leaders are welcome. Speakeasy will be Saturday, February 1.
The fun will start 9:30 a.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. at the Multi-Purpose Building. Lunch will be provided. Contact Nadine for more information, 641-1260.
Shooting Sports Leader Trainings
Nationwide, 4-H shooting sports is known for its ability to help youth develop essential life skills. Through periodic interviews, Colorado shooting sports members say they have learned respect, discipline, self-control, leadership, problem solving, sportsmanship and role modeling. There is plenty of room for a Gunnison County Shooting Sports program to grow. In order to grow dedicated leaders are crucial. Shooting Sports leaders need to be certified. The following is a list of all the 4-H Shooting Sports Leader Certification Trainings across the state. Contact Nadine, 641-1260, if you are interested in helping with Shooting Sports and attending a training. There will be financial support to help you attend.

National Western Stock Show Badges and Passes
There are day passes for National Western Stock Show at the Extension office. Please swing by the Extension office and pick up if you are headed that way. You will need them if you are not attending a ticketed event.
Your first year in 4-H can be overwhelming. Here are some helpful tips to keep from getting too lost.
A. Attend and stay in tuned with your club meetings. Try to attend as many meetings as you can so that you can get involved, make friends, and have help and support.
B. Read this newsletter. It comes electronically with links to past issues. Please contact the office if you would like to receive a hard copy. The newsletter will have important project information and upcoming events.
C. Check in with your club leader, project leader, or Extension office about Project requirements, manuals, and record books.
